Lead Mechatronics Engineer
Lead Mechatronics Engineer – Controls & Automation
Position Summary
We are seeking a Lead Mechatronics Engineer with a P.Eng. designation and strong hands-on experience in industrial controls, electrical engineering, PLC programming, and automation.
This is a technical leadership role for an engineer who is prepared to use their P.Eng. designation, review and professionally certify applicable electrical engineering documentation, select controls-system components, and take ownership of PLC and automation solutions.
You will be involved throughout the complete project lifecycle—from concept and electrical/controls design through programming, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), commissioning, and customer start-up. You will also help establish engineering standards, processes, and best practices as the company's automation capabilities continue to grow.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and development of electrical, controls, mechatronics, and automation systems for custom industrial equipment.
- Review, approve, and professionally seal/stamp electrical drawings, schematics, calculations, and engineering documentation within the scope of your P.Eng. responsibilities.
- Select and specify appropriate electrical, controls, instrumentation, PLC, safety, and automation components.
- Create, review, validate, and professionally certify applicable PLC/control-system programs and engineering deliverables.
- Develop and troubleshoot PLC programs using platforms including Siemens, Rockwell/Allen-Bradley, and IQAN, or demonstrate the technical ability to work effectively across other PLC platforms.
- Develop and review HMI applications, machine-control logic, and automation sequences.
- Design and integrate VFDs, servo systems, motion control, instrumentation, safety systems, and industrial communication networks.
- Develop comprehensive Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs), test procedures, documentation, and acceptance criteria.
- Lead and participate in FAT, commissioning, machine start-up, troubleshooting, and customer-site support.
- Diagnose complex electrical, controls, PLC, and automation issues and develop practical engineering solutions.
- Ensure engineering designs and control systems comply with applicable North American standards and codes, including CSA, CEC, NFPA, UL, IEC, and machinery-safety requirements.
- Research and interpret applicable standards and regulatory requirements for international projects and other jurisdictions.
- Work closely with mechanical, electrical, software, manufacturing, project management, suppliers, contractors, and customers.
- Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and guidance to engineers, designers, and technologists.
- Establish and improve controls-engineering standards, design practices, programming standards, documentation, templates, and processes.
- Support engineering decisions related to technology selection, system architecture, safety, reliability, maintainability, and equipment performance.
- Identify opportunities to improve automation, machine performance, safety, reliability, and engineering efficiency.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechatronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- P.Eng. designation in good standing with the ability and willingness to take professional responsibility for applicable engineering work.
- 5+ years of relevant industrial controls, automation, electrical, or mechatronics engineering experience.
- Strong hands-on experience with PLC programming, electrical controls, automation, HMI, and machine control systems.
- Strong experience with Siemens and/or Rockwell/Allen-Bradley PLCs.
- Experience with IQAN is an asset.
- Ability to understand, review, troubleshoot, and work with different PLC and automation platforms.
- Experience designing and reviewing electrical schematics and control-system drawings.
- Experience selecting electrical and controls components for industrial automation systems.
- Strong understanding of North American electrical and machinery standards, including CSA, CEC, NFPA, UL, IEC, and applicable safety standards.
- Ability to identify and research standards and regulatory requirements applicable to international markets.
- Demonstrated experience developing and executing comprehensive FATs.
- Experience with commissioning, startup, field troubleshooting, and customer support.
- Experience with VFDs, servo/motion control, instrumentation, safety systems, and industrial communication networks is an asset.
- Strong engineering judgment, analytical and troubleshooting skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to lead technical decisions while remaining hands-on and involved in the engineering work.
