Xavier Bonzom
Mechanical Design and Project Engineer at Latesys
Background
I’m a mechanical engineer with experience in design, tooling, and project management, gained through a 3-year work-study program and an internship in Canada. I’ve worked in the aerospace, automotive, and heavy industry sectors. Skilled in 3D CAD (CATIA, SolidWorks), additive manufacturing, and production processes like CNC machining and welding, I enjoy working on technical projects and creating innovative solutions in collaborative environments.
Job experience
- September 2021 - September 2024Mechanical Design and Project Engineer
LatesysSainte-Foy-d'Aigrefeuille, FranceThree-year work-study experience during engineering degree
Company specialized in designing and manufacturing assembly lines for aerospace, space, and automotive sectors.
Design of mechanical and automated assembly lines, as well as custom tooling, for Airbus (aeronautics), Airbus Defence and Space (satellites), Vitesco Technologies (automotive), and Safran Electronics & Defense.
Involved in projects within the Technology Development department, working in direct collaboration with Airbus’s Innovation division. This included managing production work packages for partially automated assembly lines integrating custom robotic solutions developed with KUKA and FANUC. These stations were designed to assemble aircraft fuselage sections with high precision, correcting floor panel manufacturing deviations and reducing structural stress during flight.
Full project lifecycle management, from initial concept to final delivery. Responsibilities included requirements definition, action planning, cost control, cross-functional coordination, and client/supplier reviews.
Mechanical design and structural sizing performed using CATIA V5 and SolidWorks. Development of prototypes using 3D printing technologies, including final part production with an Ultimaker S7 and Cura software, execution of testing phases, and preparation of comprehensive technical documentation (drawings, reports, project files).
On-site manufacturing follow-up and regular technical communication with production teams, clients, and suppliers to ensure quality and compliance of all deliverables. - June 2023 - September 2023Mechanical Engineering Internship
Latesys CanadaBrossard, QC, CanadaInvolved in several aerospace projects, including the mechanical design of assembly lines, compliance upgrades, and ergonomic improvements of existing lines for shop floor operators.
Developed technical solutions, performed mechanical design and structural sizing of aerospace assembly tooling using CATIA and SolidWorks.
Participated in project coordination and follow-up, including regular communication with subcontractors and clients, as well as the drafting of specific technical documentation. - March 2021 - August 2021Mechanical Design Technician
SavcoSaverdun, FranceDesign, Methods, and Quality Technician – Heavy Steel Fabrication
Worked in the engineering office of a company specialized in the design of hydroelectric infrastructure (dam valves, stoplogs, penstocks).
Design and structural analysis of dam valves, stoplogs, penstocks, and specialized tooling, carried out using TopSolid and RDM6.
Created assembly and manufacturing drawings; sized tooling for handling, transport, and support.
Managed production activities in direct collaboration with the workshop; performed non-destructive testing (dye penetrant, ultrasonic, etc.).
Contributed to the development of welding procedures: drafted WPS (DMOS), qualified PQR (QMOS), and prepared technical calculation notes and documentation related to non-destructive testing (NDT).
Improved operator workstations through ergonomic redesigns to enhance safety and optimize efficiency.
Education
- CESI Engineering School
Master’s level degree in General Engineering, with a specialization in Metal 3D Printing technologies.2021 - 2024General Engineering Program, completed as part of a work-study program combining engineering design and project management roles. Degree requirements completed, pending validation of an English language exam.
Training focused on the A2P2 pedagogical method (Active Learning through Problems and Projects), combining work on real projects with the resolution of practical issues.
Systematic application of the PDCA cycle (Plan-Do-Check-Act) to structure the phases of learning, design, and continuous improvement.
Program combining design engineering, project management, and development of cross-functional skills to prepare for diverse professional situations.
The training is strongly oriented towards industry and production environments.
Served as treasurer of the student association, managing budgets, organizing events, and supporting student initiatives throughout the academic years. - Paul Sabatier University – Institute of Technology
Two-year technical degree in Mechanical and Production Engineering2019 - 2021Completed a two-year Technical Diploma in Mechanical and Production Engineering (DUT GMP) in Toulouse, with a specialization in Aeronautical Engineering.
Acquired strong practical skills in mechanical design, industrial processes, and hands-on experience with machining and fabrication tools.
Program focused on real-world applications through workshops, lab sessions, and industry-relevant projects.
Engineering Project – Competitive Solex Endurance Racing Bike
Led a full redesign of a vintage Solex into a racing version for an endurance competition organized by our team. Engine: Design and machining of a custom 2-stroke engine.
Chassis: Frame modification and optimization for performance and durability.
Aerodynamics: Design and fabrication of fairings in fiberglass and carbon fiber.
Testing & Performance: Track testing on a private circuit; power optimization on a dynamometer with professional support.
Race Organization
Participated in a 6-hour endurance race, either solo or in teams, affiliated with a professional racing organization. Took charge of project management and acted as association treasurer: handled logistics, circuit reservation, budget management, administrative processes, and race authorization procedures.
